New “Greenwashed” App to Track Environmentally Harmful Products Posing as “Green”
This Earth Day, a new website and app launches to expose “greenwashed” products, or products that are falsely marketed as natural or environmentally friendly. “'Greenwashed' is a pejorative term meant to describe products containing known carcinogens or otherwise environmentally harmful which use misleading terms or images to appeal to consumers with environmental concerns,” explains Stacy Malkan, one of the three GreenWashed.com co-founders and author of, "Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry."
The app and website invite consumers to submit stories of greenwashed products and companies that are not living up to their marketing promises.
“The project was inspired by the controversial decision at the annual Earth Day festival in San Francisco to allow sponsorship by Odwalla, owned by Coca Cola Company, and Naked Juice, owned by Pepsi Cola Company,” says MonaLisa Wallace, a San Francisco Earth Day organizer and Greenwashed.com founder.
Both companies contributed a substantial amount of money to oppose Proposition 37, the California Right to Know ballot initiative to label genetically engineered foods, which narrowly lost in the November election. The labeling initiative was supported by the state’s major environmental groups.

The Truth about Genetically Engineered Salmon
On December 21st, while most of us were enjoying the holidays, the FDA took steps toward approving the first-ever Genetically Engineered animal to end up on our dinner plates. This “frankenfish” is created by scientists, in a laboratory by forcing foreign genes into the genetic code of the GE Salmon so they grow twice as fast as natural salmon.
What’s so fishy about GE salmon?
The approval of GE salmon is deliberately being classified as a “new animal drug” not a food additive and therefore subject to inadequate safety review.Read more
Be a part of the amazing team who worked so hard to help passProposition 37 and the California Right to Know Food Act. This dedicated group of thousands of moms, dads, grandparents, children, students, farmers, doctors, professors, business owners, scientists and many more walks of life joined forces to bring transparency to our food system in California. We’ve been out in the streets advocating for proper labeling of GMOs and have continued educating about the health risks that are associated with them. Join us, we need your help!
We are up against an opposition that has endless amounts of money and power, tied in with the FDA, to keep their profits high. The 6 biggest chemical companies own our world's seed supply... we, along with countless others, are outraged at the lack of seed freedom and will let nothing stand in our way to protect this freedom!
Whatever way you decide to get involved, you will find something that will inspire you, uplift you and drive you to want to make the change that so many of us see is necessary. To spread awareness about this issue and the issues we face, it comes down to us- the people on the ground talking to friends, family and community members about what we are facing. Get involved, be active, take part in the movement to stop genetic pollution.
Sacramento, CA. - Today was a historic day in California as 971,126 signatures were delivered to the 58 county registrars throughout the state. Our goal was to gather 850,000 signatures statewide in order to get the required 550, 000 valid signatures - we've surpassed our goal thanks to our volunteers!
We are now gearing up for the second phase of the campaign, and still need you!

Like any grassroots effort, we need thousands more of us out there. I'm not kidding when I say that every one of us is needed to battle this huge Goliath. And, folks...they have already started with their misinformation against this campaign.
They are mobilizing and getting out there in opposition.Read more
We're doing it! The excitement is building in California as signature gathering is in full swing across the state. Our grassroots leaders are hitting the streets and bringing in the signatures - it is truly an inspirational sight.
We've received a lot of messages from folks wanting to know where they can sign this online. Because this is a California Ballot Initiativate, we need in-person, physical signatures. We cannot gather online and have unti April 22nd to gather 800,000 signatures to get this on the 2012 California Ballot.

Dear Label GMOs Supporters,
Thank you to all who have come out and received training to help us collect the 850,000 signatures we need to get the California Genetically Engineered Food Act on the 2012 California ballot. Folks, this is an amazing opportunity to finally have a choice in whether or not we eat genetically engineered food. Everyday we hear more and more about the lack of oversight and testing to ensure the safety of our food, while the FDA continues to approve all sorts of genetically engineered products for ingestion. (Including those that withstand 2-4D, a dangerous chemical used in Agent Orange.)
